About Lago Pehoe
Lago Pehoe sits at the centre of Torres del Paine National Park, and from it you have wonderful views of the Paine Grande mountain and the Cuernos (horns) del Paine (see the photo to the right). Pehoe is a tehuelche word meaning 'hidden' and is pronounced "pay-oh-way".
On its north western shore lies Refugio Grande Paine, one of the key resting places on the W Circuit. To the North East is the Salto Grande waterfall, and in the South East the Salto Chico waterfall and a number of accommodation options: Hosteria Pehoe, Camping Pehoe and the Explora Hotel.
The lake is large, more than 10km wide, the ferry (see photo on the right) across (from Paine Grande Lodge to the North East) takes approximately an hour.
Most visitors first catch a glimpse of the lake whilst hiking the W Circuit. However the views from its Western shores (see photo to the right) are wonderful and the 4 to 5 hour hike (or horseride) up from the Administration centre is relatively flat and less trodden route.
Watching the sun set on Pehoe from Camping or Refugio Paine Grande is a peaceful and rewarding end to a day of hiking along the Grey Lake or up the French Valley.
